i hear you make from 10-20 bucks an hour as u begin, and people say you can work ur way up to 100 an hour. is it true?
As a game developer, I can guarantee you that testers will make nowhere near that amount. Programmers don't even make that much usually. $100/hour would equal $208,000 per year on a 40-hour work week.
Note- in the industry, the testing department is referred to as the Q&A department (Quality and Assurance department).
One reason why testers don't get paid much is that it's very easy to find people willing to test a game for FREE. Just check out how many people signed up for the Warhammer MMORPG beta– hundreds of thousands, if I remember correctly.
The Q&A team that's actually paid (close to minimum wage, often) is unlikely to have much fun. As a game developer, you usually don't throw a game at somebody and say "is it fun enough?" Instead, it's more like "do every little, tiny thing you can in the game– open every door, walk to every point in the screen, battle every monster with dozens of team combinations– and tell us every bug, big or small, that you find in the game." That's the kind of thing that you'd pay someone else to do– long, tedious, boring tasks. Everything else, as a game developer, you can often test by yourself.
